The best spam filters for Apple Mail in 2026
Six spam filters for Apple Mail compared: the built-in junk filter, Klar, SpamSieve, SaneBox, Clean Email, Leave Me Alone. Where each runs and what it costs.
Apple Mail comes with junk filtering, and for classic spam it does its job. What lands in your inbox anyway is the gray zone: cold outreach, promo blasts, newsletters you never asked for, and spam in a second language. This guide compares the spam filters that handle that layer, for Apple Mail specifically.
One thing first: Klar is our product, and we rank it first. Every claim about another tool comes from that vendor’s own public pages, and each one gets a genuine verdict, including where it is a better pick than Klar.
1. Klar: a multilingual model, on your Mac
Klar is a Mail extension: install it from the App Store, switch it on in Mail’s settings, and every incoming message is classified on your Mac. The model is XLM-RoBERTa, a 550-million-parameter multilingual transformer that reads over 100 languages and detects the language automatically, no configuration needed. Nothing is sent to a server: no cloud, no API calls, no telemetry.
- Free on the App Store. Requires macOS 14 and Apple Silicon.
- Classifies into four categories: spam, regular mail, marketing, gibberish.
- An optional paid companion, Klar Plus, is coming: it shows every classification, lets you correct mistakes, and retrains the model on your own mail, entirely on-device. It adds to the free app rather than replacing it, and Klar stays free.
- Best for: spam that arrives in more than one language, and anyone who wants a modern model without giving a service access to their mailbox.
2. SpamSieve: the proven on-device veteran
SpamSieve has filtered Mac mail for two decades. It uses Bayesian filtering you train yourself: mark messages, and its word statistics adapt to your mail. Like Klar, it runs entirely on your Mac. C-Command states it does not transmit your mail data anywhere.
- $39.99 one-time purchase, 30-day free trial.
- Works with Apple Mail, Outlook and other Mac clients over IMAP, Exchange and POP.
- Best for: people who like training their own filter and want a mature indie tool. Word statistics are per-language, so a multilingual inbox means more training. Our full comparison: Klar vs SpamSieve.
3. Apple Mail’s built-in junk filter: the free baseline
Before adding anything, configure what ships with your Mac. Mail’s junk filtering is on by default, moves suspected junk out of the inbox, and adapts to the messages you mark. You can also block specific senders. See Apple’s Mail User Guide. Third-party filters add to this baseline; they do not replace it.
4. SaneBox: cloud triage by importance
SaneBox is not primarily a spam filter: it sorts mail by importance in its cloud, so unimportant messages skip your inbox. It states it analyzes headers to decide what matters and never stores message bodies. From $4.99/month with two-year billing.
- Best for: too much legitimate mail rather than spam, if you are comfortable connecting your mailbox to a service. Our comparison: Klar vs SaneBox.
5. Leave Me Alone: unsubscribe first, spam blocking second
Leave Me Alone is built around unsubscribing: it follows unsubscribe links for you and rolls newsletters into digests. Its spam blocker learns which senders you do not want, in its cloud, and targets cold outreach. From $9/month, or a $19 one-time 7-day pass.
- Best for: pruning subscriptions across several accounts. For the filtering itself, mail is processed on their servers. See Klar vs Leave Me Alone.
6. Clean Email: bulk cleanup with rules
Clean Email attacks the backlog: smart folders act on thousands of messages at once, and Auto Clean rules keep new mail sorted. It states it reads headers only and never downloads message bodies. From $7.99/month.
- Best for: digging out an overflowing mailbox. Filtering means rules you define yourself, not a model that learns. See Klar vs Clean Email.

How to choose a spam filter for Apple Mail
Match the tool to the mail that annoys you. Too much legitimate mail: SaneBox. A mailbox to dig out: Clean Email. Subscriptions everywhere: Leave Me Alone. Actual spam on a Mac: an on-device filter, SpamSieve if you want to train it yourself, Klar if you want a multilingual model that works out of the box. And if your spam arrives in French, German or any second language, the difference is not subtle: word-statistics filters must relearn each language from your corrections, while Klar’s model already reads them.
