About Klar

Klar is an AI spam filter for Apple Mail that runs entirely on your Mac. No cloud, no account, no automatic telemetry. It catches the spam that slips past Apple's junk filter, including AI-written scams and phishing.

The part of it that reads your mail holds no network permission at all, which anyone can verify with one codesign command against the installed app. A usage summary leaves only when the user sends an editable email report themselves.

Klar Plus, in development, adds learning from your corrections on the device.

Founder

Klar is built by Nicolas Ha, a software engineer with around ten years building large-scale messaging infrastructure and security for regulated systems. That work includes the platform behind a major news site (over a billion views a month), core components for a bank's licensing, and a message-broker SaaS he built and ran on his own. His view is simple: spam is a messaging problem and privacy is a security problem, the two things he has worked on for a decade. He is based in France and is backed by experienced entrepreneurs and technical advisors from the messaging and machine-learning world.

Technical details

Classifier: a multilingual transformer (XLM-RoBERTa) quantized to run on-device, alongside a fast local scorer. Both run on every message and their signals are composed; neither gates the other.
On-device learning belongs to Klar Plus, still in development: corrections train a small personal model on the Mac, and nothing is uploaded. The free app classifies mail but does not retrain.
Three sensitivity profiles (Cautious, Standard, Aggressive) tune the balance between false positives and catch rate.
Klar Plus, in development: an optional paid companion that shows every decision, lets you correct it, and learns from those corrections on the device. It adds to the free app rather than replacing it, and Klar stays free.

Brand

The mark

One mark, and it is the app icon. Use it as-is; do not recolour it, redraw it or set it on a plate of your own. On its own for an icon slot, or with the wordmark beside it in running text.
