iPhone Mail spam filter: what exists, what does not, and what works
There is no spam filter to turn on in iPhone Mail. What filters your iPhone’s inbox, what you can do in the app, and how a Mac cleans the same mailbox.
People search for an iPhone Mail spam filter because their iPhone inbox has spam in it and Settings has nothing that looks like a filter. Both are true, and the second explains the first. This page says what actually filters an iPhone’s mail, what the app lets you do about a message, what an app store cannot sell you, and the one setup that changes the result.
Where an iPhone’s mail is filtered
The Mail app on iPhone receives messages that a server has already sorted. For an iCloud address, Apple filters junk on its servers before the message syncs to any device. For Gmail, Outlook, or any other IMAP account, the provider’s filter runs at the provider. That is why there is no “turn on spam filter” switch in Settings: on the phone there is nothing to turn on. What you can do in the app
Two things, both corrections rather than configuration. Swipe a message left, tap More, then “Move to Junk”: for an iCloud account that also tells Apple’s filter it was wrong. For a sender who keeps coming back, tap the name at the top of the message, tap “View Contact Card”, then “Block this Contact”. By default their mail then goes to Trash, on every Apple device signed in to the same account; Settings > Mail > Blocked Sender Options can leave it in the Inbox, marked, instead.
Why there is no iPhone app that filters your mail
On the Mac, Apple Mail lets an extension read each incoming message and act on it; that is how Klar runs, on the Mac, inside Mail. On iPhone, iOS offers mail apps no such hook. A third-party app on the phone can only be a different mail client, or a service that logs in to your account from its own servers and moves messages there. The first replaces Mail; the second means a company reading your mail in its cloud. Neither is a filter running on your iPhone.
The setup that works: a Mac cleaning the same mailbox
Your iPhone and your Mac show the same account, and a mailbox lives on the server, not on either device. When Klar on the Mac moves a message into Junk, it moves it in the account’s Junk folder, so the iPhone shows it there the next time it syncs. For the first 30 days after install Klar flags spam red instead of moving it, unless you pick Move to Junk in its Filtering Settings; the flag syncs the same way. The condition is the obvious one: the Mac has to be on, with Mail open, when the message arrives. A Mac that sleeps overnight cleans the mailbox when it wakes.

Texts are a separate problem
Spam texts do not go through a mail server, so none of the above touches them. For those there is Klar for Messages, a separate free iPhone app in beta that sorts texts from unknown senders on the phone itself, which iOS does allow for messages.
Common questions
How do I turn on the spam filter on my iPhone?
There is nothing to turn on. Filtering already runs at iCloud or at your provider before the message reaches the phone. In the app you can move a message to Junk or block a sender.
Is there a spam filter app for iPhone Mail?
Not one that runs on the phone: iOS gives mail apps no way to act on incoming messages. What is sold as one is either another mail client or a cloud service that reads your mail on its servers.
Does Klar work on iPhone?
Klar filters mail on the Mac. Because it moves spam in the account’s Junk folder, an iPhone on the same account shows the cleaned mailbox, as long as the Mac is on with Mail open. For texts there is Klar for Messages, an iPhone app.
Why does spam still reach my iPhone?
Because your provider’s filter let it through, and the iPhone shows what the provider delivered. The fix is upstream: a better filter at the provider, or a Mac running one on the mailbox.
