How to turn on and tune Apple Mail’s spam filter
Apple Mail already filters spam, on the Mac, on iCloud.com, and on iPhone. How to turn it on, tune it, and block a sender.
Apple Mail has filtered junk mail for years, but the setting is easy to miss and its actual coverage is easy to overstate. This guide collects what exists today on the Mac, on iCloud.com, and on iPhone, with the exact label in each interface, plus what still lands in your inbox once everything is turned on.
Where do you read your mail?
Find the right setting
The setting you need depends on the device and the account, not one central menu.
Where do you want to change the filter?
Mail > Settings > Junk Mail.
Three actions to choose from, plus a checkbox that reuses your provider’s own spam signal.
On the Mac: turn on and tune the filter
The setting lives in Mail > Settings > Junk Mail. Check “Enable junk mail filtering,” then pick one of three actions:
- “Mark it as junk mail, but leave it in my Inbox”: nothing moves, the message just gets labeled.
- “Move it to the Junk mailbox”: the usual default, straight to its own folder.
- “Perform custom actions”: opens an Advanced button for rules you write yourself.
A separate checkbox, “Trust junk mail headers in messages,” has Mail treat any spam header your provider already attached as another signal, on top of its own filtering. A provider’s false positive carries through rather than getting corrected.
To fix a mis-sorted message, select it and click the junk button in the toolbar, or drag it between the Inbox and the Junk mailbox.
On iCloud.com: sort mail without turning anything on
At icloud.com/mail there is no separate switch: select a message, click “More,” then “Move Message to Junk” (or drag it into the folder in the sidebar). A mis-sorted message is fixed the same way from the Junk folder, with “Move Message” to Inbox.
Messages in the Junk folder are deleted automatically after 30 days, so it’s worth checking in every so often before that happens.
On iPhone and iPad: nothing to turn on, only to correct
This is the one that trips up the most people, because Settings has no “spam filter” option for Mail at all. Detection already runs: server-side for an iCloud account, at your provider for Gmail, Outlook, or any other IMAP account, before the message ever reaches your iPhone.
What you do in the app is confirm or correct it: swipe a message left, tap More, then “Move to Junk.”
Blocking a sender who keeps coming back
Reporting every message from a repeat sender takes time. Blocking is faster and works across every Apple device you own.
On the Mac, hover over the sender’s name in the message header, click the arrow, then choose “Block Contact” (macOS 14 and 15) or “Block Sender” (macOS 26 and later). The full list lives in Mail > Settings > Junk Mail > Blocked on macOS 14 and 15, or in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Blocked Contacts from macOS 26 on.
On iPhone or iPad, tap the sender’s name at the top of the message, tap “View Contact Card,” then “Block this Contact”: future messages from them go to Trash, not Junk, and unblocking in one app unblocks it everywhere.
What none of this catches
The built-in filter handles classic spam, the kind that looks like spam. What stays in the inbox once all of this is turned on is the gray zone: cold outreach written to sound legitimate, promotions nobody asked for, and spam written in a language the filter reads poorly.
That is where a dedicated filter, running on the Mac rather than in the cloud, makes a real difference. Klar classifies every message that arrives in Apple Mail on the Mac, free, with a multilingual model that needs no setup of its own. We compare Klar against five other Apple Mail filters in our full comparison.
Common questions
How do I turn on the spam filter on my iPhone?
There is nothing to turn on in Settings: detection already runs, server-side for iCloud and at your provider for other accounts. You confirm or correct it by swiping a message to Junk.
How do I stop getting spam on my iPhone?
Swipe the message left, tap More, then Move to Junk. For a sender who keeps coming back, tap their name at the top of the message, tap View Contact Card, then Block this Contact.
How do I turn on the spam filter on my Mac?
Mail > Settings > Junk Mail, check Enable junk mail filtering, then pick one of the three actions the pane offers.
How do I stop getting spam in my inbox at all?
Turn on the platform’s own filtering on iCloud.com and iPhone, where Klar doesn’t run. On the Mac, once Klar is installed, turn Apple Mail’s own junk filtering off instead (Mail > Settings > Junk Mail, uncheck Enable junk mail filtering), so the two filters don’t disagree. Block senders who keep coming back, and for what still gets through, especially in a second language, that’s what Klar is for.
