People search for the best anti-spam software when the inbox is overflowing: fake parcel notifications, cold outreach, newsletters you never asked for, bank phishing. How to judge anti-spam software
- Where it runs: locally on your machine, or in the vendor’s cloud. That decides who can read your mail.
- What it reads: headers only (sender, subject), or the whole message. A filter that does not read the body cannot see what hides there.
- What it costs: free, a one-time purchase, or a subscription that keeps running.
And before installing anything: Gmail and Outlook.com already filter on the server, included. Apple Mail has its own junk filter, which adapts to the messages you mark. The tools below add to that baseline, for everything that gets through anyway.
1. Klar: free, on-device and multilingual
Klar is a spam filter for Apple Mail: a Mail extension, free on the Mac App Store, that classifies every incoming message on your Mac. The model is XLM-RoBERTa, a 550-million-parameter multilingual transformer that reads over 100 languages and detects the language automatically. It sorts mail into four categories: spam, regular mail, marketing, gibberish. Everything happens on the Mac: no cloud, no account, no telemetry. SpamSieve has filtered Mac mail for two decades. It is Bayesian filtering you train yourself: you mark messages, and its word statistics adapt to your mail. 3. Leave Me Alone: unsubscribe first
Leave Me Alone is built around bulk unsubscribing: it follows unsubscribe links for you and rolls newsletters together. Its spam blocker learns, in its cloud, which senders you do not want, and targets cold outreach. From $9/month, or a $19 7-day pass. 4. Clean Email: bulk cleanup with rules
Clean Email attacks the backlog: its smart folders act on thousands of messages at once, and its rules keep incoming mail sorted. The vendor states it analyzes headers only and never reads message bodies; that is reassuring, but it also bounds what the filter can see. From $7.99/month, in the cloud. 5. SaneBox: triage by importance, not anti-spam
SaneBox is not primarily an anti-spam tool: it sorts mail by importance in its cloud, so unimportant messages skip your inbox. It states it analyzes headers and never stores message bodies. 6. MailWasher: Windows only
MailWasher takes the old-school route: it previews mail on the server, before download, and you delete spam before it touches your machine. Free for one address, Pro from $49.95. What about European ISP mailboxes?
Mailboxes from European ISPs, Orange, Free, SFR or La Poste for example, come with the provider’s own server-side filtering. Most of these accounts work over IMAP in Apple Mail, and that is where the choice of filter matters: an on-device Mac filter like Klar or SpamSieve classifies mail from these accounts exactly like mail from Gmail or iCloud, because it works inside Mail, whatever the provider.
For organizations
